Sometimes it’s good to get out of the factory and visit some of the great museums and galleries in the area.

In the summer I visited Gawthorpe Hall, owned and maintained by the National Trust. It dates from the early 1600s (Jacobean period) and is worthy of a visit just for the building itself but it also houses an extensive international collection of textiles and clothing.

Founded by the Honourable Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth (1886-1967) the collection was amassed to teach, to support creativity and wellbeing, to support employability, to preserve traditional craft skills and to share knowledge, skills and expertise across cultures.  You can check out the website here.

Seeing how garments and fabrics were constructed in times past and also what modern craftspeople are up to, can help solve problems and give you inspiration to try new things.

The collection contains not only examples of antique and older articles but also new pieces from modern artists and craftspeople.
